Welcome To Insight!

Who cometh thither? 🙂

Greetings!

My name is Dr. Winnie Waiyaki. I am a Clinical Psychologist.

My training enables me to work with people with emotional, behavioural and mental issues. These range from short-term, relatively minor personal issues to those who have major issues of disturbance, including those who require institutionalization.

Accordingly, my line of work sees me attending to people with conditions such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, learning disabilities, substance abuse and post-traumatic stress disorder among others.

I attend to children, adolescents, couples and families of all cultures who may require therapy.

As a Clinical Psychologist, I assess clients using a variety of methods to identify the specific issues that they may be facing. I spend time seeking to understand not only the nature of the client’s issue but also, it’s causes and effects. I have been trained to use observation, personal interviews, and psychological tests among other means to assess a client. These include intelligence, personality, behavioural and emotional tests.

In clinical psychology, we believe in understanding a client in the fullest sense possible. This means that we might have discussions with a client’s family members and acquaintances. This helps the psychologist get a deeper understanding of a client and puts them in a position to help the client better.

Having gained an understanding of the client, I then apply various psychological methods of treatment. These have been tried and tested through research. This is what we call psychotherapy. Some clients require multidisciplinary care. This means that I work with different professionals to treat the client holistically.

My passion for this blog is to shed light on and demystify the whole question of therapy. With mental health becoming more and more of a concern I feel the need to address practical aspects of therapy for both clients and beginning therapists. These are practical aspects that may not be in the public domain. Many people who come to therapy are usually very nervous because they do not know what to expect. My hope is that this blog will demonstrate therapy in a simple manner and reveal it as the helpful tool that it is.

This blog will also seek to provide a way of destigmatizing mental illness. In addition to the posts on therapy, there will be posts from people with mental illness. These stories, hopefully, will give you a glimpse into the lives of ordinary people living with mental illness.
In therapy, many clients end up gaining insight. This just means that they understand themselves better and receive the help that assists them to function optimally in society. Hopefully, this blog will dismantle the myths surrounding mental illness.

If you want to get in touch with me, share your story or inquire further, feel free to comment below or email me at wemapsych.insight@gmail.com. My team and I are looking forward to hearing from you!

Welcome, and enjoy!
